CITY OF KENAI
ORDINANCE NO. 2819 -2015
AN ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, ACCEPTING
AND APPROPRIATING A GRANT FROM THE ALASKA STATE LIBRARY FOR THE
PURCHASE OF EARLY LITERACY PLAYSPACE ITEMS.
WHEREAS, the City of Kenai has received a $909 Grant from the Alaska State Library
for the purchase of early literacy playspace materials; and,
WHEREAS, items to be purchased were included in the original grant applications and
are intended not to construct space, but rather take a small space within the library
and transform it into an area that will provide literacy activities for children birth to
five years of age and activities for parental engagement; and,
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of the City of Kenai and its library patrons to
accept this grant for the purchase of these materials for the creation of a literacy
playspace.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI,
ALASKA:
Section 1. Form. That this is a non -code ordinance.
Section 2. That the City Manager is authorized to accept a grant from the Alaska
State Library in the amount of $909 for the purchase of early literacy playspace items
and to execute grant agreements and to expend funds to fulfill the purpose and intent
of this ordinance.
Section 3. That estimated revenues and appropriations be increased as follows:
General Fund
Increase Estimated Revenues:
Library - State Grants $909
Increase Appropriations:
Library - Operating & Repair Supplies $9-Q2

SUBJECT: Early Literacy Play Space Mini Grant
The Alaska State Library has awarded the Kenai Community Library a grant to support
creation of an early literacy play space in the library in the amount of $909. This was a
competitive grant process.
Items to be purchased were specified in the grant application based on suggestions from
the State Library. Our children's librarian selected materials that enhance our current
programming. This grant is not intended to pay for construction of a space, but rather
take a small existing space within the library and transform it into an area that will
provide literacy activities for children ages birth to age five as well opportunities for
parental engagement.
We look forward to purchasing these items. All funds must be expended by March 31,
2015.
