CITY OF KENAI
ORDINANCE NO. 2888 -2016
AN ORDINANCE OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, ACCEPTING AND
APPROPRIATING A FEDERAL GRANT FROM THE US DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE, US FOREST SERVICE PASSED THROUGH THE STATE OF ALASKA
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, DIVISION OF FORESTRY.
WHEREAS, the City's Parks, Recreation and Beautification Department has received a
$600 grant from the US Department of Agriculture, US Forest Service passed through
the State of Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry for the
installation of a small sustainable food production area to be located at the Kenai
Community Gardens site; and,
WHEREAS, the grant requires a $600 match which the department plans to meet with
funds already appropriated in its FY16 Budget.
Section 1. Form. That this is a non -code ordinance.
Section 2. That the City Manager is authorized to accept a grant from the US Department
of Agriculture, US Forest Service passed through the State of Alaska Department of
Natural Resources, Division of Forestry for the installation of a small sustainable food
production area to be located at the Kenai Community Gardens site and to execute grant
agreements and to expend the grant funds to fulfill the purpose and intent of this
ordinance.
Section 3. That estimated revenues and appropriations be increased as follows:

SUBJECT: State of Alaska, Division of Forestry — Food Forest Grant
The Kenai Parks & Recreation Department applied for and was awarded, upon approval, a $600
grant from the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry. The
purpose of this grant is for installing a small sustainable food production area, located at the
Kenai Community Gardens.
This area (approximately 7,000 sq. ft) will comprise of berries and apple trees suitable for South
Central Alaska and serve as a model for the community and State of Alaska. Fostering land
stewardship, sharing of knowledge and increasing public awareness of trees and sustainable
forests are key components of this program.
The department anticipates involvement from local garden enthusiasts and other volunteers to
accomplish the planting. This work will be facilitated by Randy Dodge. Anticipated date of
planting is early June.
