Causes of death have shifted. Just over 100 years ago,
infectious disease used to cause most deaths in the United
States, includes infections, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and
influenza. The leading causes of death currently include heart
disease, cancer, suicide, and other noninfectious diseases.
Mortality rates from all causes have declined by 54 percent
between 1900 and 2010.

Due to changing health outcomes, older adults will compose a
higher share of the US population in the years to come, and
many health outcomes are tied to behavioral choices.
Just as clean water and sanitation systems were designed to
prevent infectious diseases over the last few decades, we can
design communities to incorporate physical activity, social
interaction, and interaction with the natural environment into
every day life to prevent illness from mental health, heart
disease, and other noninfectious diseases.

There will be a higher percentage of older
adults in the coming decades

The most motivating keynote speaker at the 2019 APA-AK
Conference was sponsored by AARP---Mr. Gil Penalosa shared the
idea of 808 cities, where communities design with the 8-year-old
and 80-year-old in mind.
