A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF K]~AI,

WHEREAS, the west shore of the Kenai Peninsula offers a "
magnificent panoramic view of the Alaska and Aleutian Mountain.
Ranges. Four of their most prominent and active volcanoes,.Mt,
Illiamna, Mt. Redoubt, Mr. Spur, and Mt. Augustine, are routinely
viewed and accessed from the west shore of the Kenai Peninsula~
and,
WHF~EAS, because of their potential impact to the Kenai Peninsula ~i
and Southcentral Alaska, there is continuing need to monitor,
research and more fully understand volcanic activity which will
be valuable and applicable in educating the people of Alaska in .~'!

WHEREAS, the Alaska Volcano Observatory maintains equi ment
~hese volcanoes, actively supports devel~-~.-+ ~ ~- ~---~ on

monitoring equipment to the facility~ and,
WHEREAS, recognizing the Kenai Peninsula,s unemployment rate of
approximately 12% as one of the highest in Alaska, it is believed
significant economic benefit will be gained from the
construction, operation, and development of a world-class volcano
learning center and related visitor attractions on the west shO'

To ensure that visitors l~ave feeling "wowed", they will experience tach activities and
rooms as ~o large walk-through mod~l of a volcano with sound and motion, a plar~ tectonics'

conditions ~f volcanoes throughout thc world from the Volcano Command C~nt~r, Also f~
will b~ an auditorium for multi-madia film presentations focusing on a variety of natural ~
fozces, a working robot us~ in volcano research, nd other intaractive and aducational "
Th~ educational programs of the C~ntcr will provide lm~ing Cxl~rienccs for beth ddldren
and adults and will be designed to utilize a hands-on a~cb to 'fun lmming'. Key concepts of.

various outreach programs, acadgmic competitions,, science can.ps, elder hostels, and college

The Center will offer remarkable pmmramic view of tl~ four active volcanoes of' the Cook
Irdct rcgion: Mounts Spurt, Re, doubt, Ilianma and St. Au~mtinc. Thc visitors will also h&vc
acce~ to die. exhibit/display areas, .auditortum/~r, and a Sift shop/bookstm~ with a variety Of

volcano gi~ts and souvenirs. Ocher visitor services will includ~ meeting' moms, food service with
indoor andioutdoor seating, picnic and playground areas, and trails for hiking and cross-oountry
skiing. Tours, including recreational helicopter tours of the maior Cook Inlet active volcanoes,
will also b~ available.
