A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OFT HE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA,
SUPPORTING THE CONCEPT OF A BIKE TRAIL/SAFETY PATH IN THE KENAI'
SPUR HIGHWAY WIDENING PROJECT.
WHEREAS, the Kenai Spur Highway, from Milepost 0 to Milepost
10.6, between Kenai and Soldotna, is scheduled to be widened and
upgraded by the State of Alaska; and,
WHEREAS, there will be approximately 5.5 miles of roadway without
a sidewalk or trail in the "rural" section; and,
WHEREAS, a bike trail/safety path, which forms a continuous link
between Kenai and Soldotna, would benefit residents of both
co~unities, now and in the future; and,
WHEREAS, planning and design need to occur at this stage, even if :"-
actual construction of the entire bike trail/safety path does not :;
occur until a later date.
NOW .THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
KENAI, ALASKA, that
Section 1~ Those responsible for planning and design of the
Kenai Spur Highway widening project shall include in the plan and
design, a bike trail/safety path that will provid· a continuous
link between Kenai and Soldotna.
Section ~:, This resolution shall be distributed to the
Department'of Transportation COmmissioner, Kenai spur'Highw&y
Project Manager, Kena! Peninsula Highways Planner, Senator. Paul
Fischer, Representatives Mike Navarre and Gail Phillips.
PASSED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, the 21st day

The Unity Trail Committee, a core of central peninsula
volunteers, plan a Spur Highway trail in conjunction with the
1992-93 Department of Transportation upgrade project. Members
requested and received $100,000 in design costs from the 1.990
l~gislature. The funds were subsequently cut by budget veto.
As you consider the important capital projects intended for the
City of Kenai~ our organization asks that you support in concept,
the planning of a pathway (approx. 5 miles) connecting the.

always been on planning dollars for an add/alternate to the total
