Q~E~S, the Trail Lakes Fish Hatchur~ was constructed by the State of
Alaska to enhance the salaon fiehew for the Kenai Pen~neu!a and Prince

hatchery produced silver salaon which return to Resurrection Bay; and

EncXosed for your information is a copy of city o~ Seward
Resolution Nor ~8-015, urging the state to continue ful! fund-
'Lng of the Trail Lakes Fish Hatchery. This resolution was
approved by the Seward City Council at its regular meeting of
February 8, 1988.
The City Council would appreciate your support in its endeavor
to assure the continued operation of the Trail Lakes Hatchery
aa a part o£ the Resurrection Bay and Prince William Sound
£isheries enhancement program.

RESOLUTION NO. 88-015
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SEWARD, ALASKA, URGING FULL F~NDING OF THE
TRAIL LAKES FISH HATCHERY
WHEREAS, the Trail Lakes Fish Hatchery was constructed
by the state of Alaska to enhance the salmon fishery for the
.Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound; and
WHEREAS, Trail Lakes Hatchery ia currently the breeding
ground for all hatchery produced silver salmon which return
to Resurrection Bay; and
WHEREAS, the sport salmon fishery in Seward is
dependent upon Trail Lakes Hatchery for its continued
success; and
WHEREAS, Trail Lakes Hatchery would be the logical
facility to enhance the sockeye population in Bear Lake; and
WHEREAS, the Crooked Creek Hatchery currently obtains
its fingerlings from the Trail Lakes Hatchery for its smelt
production; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Fish and Game has proposed
to eliminate the Trail Lakes Hatchery program from its FY
1989 budget and transfer management and operation of the
£acility to Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association; and
WHEREAS, CIAA has given no assurances that it will
continue to provide fisherios enhancement services to the
Kenai Peninsula, and it is possible that its resources will
be diverted to the Cook Inlet;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF SEWARD, ALASKA, that:
section 1. The AlaSka Department of Fish and Game is
urged'"to""iully fund the $350,000 annual operating budget for
the Trail Lakes Fish Hatchery in order to assure continued
support of the sport fishery in Resurrection Bay and the
rest of the Kenai Peninsula and the commercial fishery in
Prince William Sound.
