COOPEI~TION WITH THE CITY OF KODI~, ALASIr~ ~ID THE KODIAK ISLAND
BOROUGH OF THE STATE OF ~I~SI~ OPPOSING ~ECORDATION OF THE TI~DE
N~IE "~ASIr~t~ SF~,FOOD COHP/~NY" FOR A CH/INDLER, ~IZONA
CORPOI~TZON.
WHERI~S, the seafood resources and the developing
~ndustr~ oE the State of A~aska are v~tal to the State's overall
eCO~O~
~ER~S, s~nce ~980, the State of A~aska has e~ended s~gn~E~cant
[~nancial resources through the Alaska Seafood ~arke~ing
[nsm~tute to successfully promote ~askan seafood pr~ucts ~n the
U.S. and ~nternat~onal ~arkets~ and,
~HE~S, cons~ers are entitled to expec2 products ~abeled ~n any
form suggesting ~aska seafood to be, ~n fact, seafood oE A~askan
or~g~n; and,
~ERE~S, appearing ~n Vol~e 5~, No. 228 oE the Federal ~eg~ster,
dated ~ednesda~, Nove~er 26, 2986, ~s the announcement o~ an
appl~can2 Eot recordation of trade name, ~Alaskan Seafood
Company' o~ Chandler, ~r~zona which applicant proposes to use
sa~d trade name ~n connection ~th ~resh frozen seafo~
manufactured ~n ~ex~co and the U.S.; and,
~ERE~S, a product bearing a trade name ~A~aska~ or ~Alaskan,~
which ~s [aulm~ or substandard, which ~n fact, d~d not originate
in ~laska, ~ou~d cause undue economic harm 2o the f~sh~ng
~ndusmry ~n the State oE Alaska; and,
~EREAS, the Alaskan seafood ~mage ~s one of clean, cold
clean a~r, shining mo~ta~ns, and untouched ~lderness, all
~h~ch ~mply superior products from ~he northern seas; and,
~ERE~S, a corporation not even remotel~ close to Alaska
trying to cash in on superior products ~rom the State of Alaska~

NOW THEREFORE° BE IT RESOLVED 'I~IAT THE COIINC&L OF THE CITY OF
KENAI, ALbEIt, ~oins with the City of Kodiak and the Kodiak
Island Borough in opposition to the recordation of the trade na=e
"Alaskan Seafood Company" to the Chandler, Arizona corporation in
conneotion with Mexican manufactured seafood products.
BE IT I~JIt~IIERRESOLVED BY DIRECTION OF THE KIINAZ CIT~ COONCIL,
that copies of this resolution be sent to the Honorable Steve
Cowper, Governor; the Honorable Frank H. Hurkowski, U.S. Senator;
the Honorable Ted Stevens, U.S. Senator; the Honorable Donald E.
Young, U.S. House of Representatives; the Honorable Paul Fischer,
Senator, State of Alaska; the Honorable Hike Navarre,
Representative, State sE Alaska; the Honorable C.E. Swackhamner,
Representative, State of Alaska; Tony Smith, Commissioner, Alaska
Department of Commerce; Ms. Mary Tuten, Executive Director,
Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute; Kodiak Borough Assembly; and,
City of Kodiak City Council.

scheduled City Council Meeting of February 4, 1987. This
resolution was written in cooueration with the City of Kodiak and
the Kodiak Island borough o~osing recordation of the trade na~e
"Alaskan Seafood Company" for a Chandler, Arizona corporation.
