Xn our case any foretgn shtpptn9 requtree the presence of a customs offfcer. That generally moans the expense of brtngtng offtcere from Anchorage vta commercial or charter afrcraft~ depending on scheduling. Stnce federal att safety regulations requtre that officers fly a twtn englne aircraft, the cost to the shtpper for the presence of · customs offtcer can be tn excess of S2~000. Thte cont~ alan9 wtth others, tends to make our port less desirable than Anchorage, for 1fist&nco. Last, year, Seward submitted an application to become a Cueton~ Port of Entry vlth the hopes of being able to reduce nome of these costs. Unfortunately, federal 9utdellse$ relattn9 to popul&tton end total number of vtstts made Sevard Ineligible for such a claestftcetten. Tie ere now tn the process of applytn9 for the orentton of an Area-vide Customs Port of Entry to tnclude the Kenat Peninsula es a whole. Tie have htred Hr. Vern Grosnvald, recently rettred Alaska Dtntrtct Dtrector of the U.S. Custom Servtce, to research shipping statistics for Keno1 Peninsula porte and to prepare a new Customs Port of Entry appltontton. Our agreement ,tth Hr. Groen~ald ts $S~000 for the &ppllcetton package, reimbursable expenses not to exceed $S~000 end a S2,S00 bonus tf the Custom Port of Entry statue te approved.
