The recommended start time for this event is 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with a BBQ starting at 12:30 p.m. Generally, volunteers are needed to plant the Visitors & Cultural Center, Blue Star Memorial, Leif Hansen Memorial Park, old Re-Max bed and four small concrete planters along the Kenai Spur Highway. Please see attachment for details Thank you for your attention to this matter. Attachment 2 WELCOME TO THE City OF KENAI VOLUNTEER PLANT DAY! 10:00 AM - Sign in at Kenai Fire Dept. 10:15AM – 12:30PM: Plant Flowers 12:30PM – 2:00PM: BBQ at Fire Dept. All the flower beds have been prepped (weeded, tilled, and fertilized) and flowers are already placed at the designated beds. Planting Tips: 1. Dig the Hole – Dig a hole deep enough and wide enough to hold the plant’s root system; if it will hold the plant and pot, it will easily hold the plant by itself, with plenty of room to fill in loose dirt under and around the plant. 2. Carefully Remove Plant from Pot – Lightly squeeze sides of pot. With one hand supporting the bottom of pot, tip over pot so that the plant and soil slide out together. 3. Loosen the Edge of Root Ball, if needed – Gently tease out the tips of the roots, particularly if roots are wrapped around (root bound). 4. Place Roots in the Ground – Make sure root system gets buried below the soils surface. Press soil firmly around the root making sure soil is solid enough to support the plant and hold roots in place. Note: Flower quantities are approximate. We suggest you arrange potted or unpotted flowers in the bed according to design and then rearrange as needed. If you need more material to complete an arrangement, you may call Randy Dodge at 907-625-1604 Trash bags are provided for: • Litter and debris in proximity of your bed • You may encounter some weeds; please place them in the trash bag. • Place all pots and trays in one bag separate from litter and weeds. Leave bags on site. City staff will come around at the end of the day and pick up all supplies and bags. Staff will water the beds. Enjoy and thank you for your service! 3 MEMORANDUM TO: Parks and Recreation Beautification Committee FROM: Brad Walker, Parks Director DATE: May 11, 2022 SUBJECT: Beautification Goals and Objectives 2022-2023 The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with a draft of the 2022-2023 Beautification goals and objectives.
