INTERVIEW CITY MANAGER APPLICANT CHRIS HLADICK

7:00 P.M.
MAYOR JOHN J. WILLIAMS, PRESIDING
Council Present: Bookey, Swarner, Porter, Williams, Moore, Frazer and Bannock
Mayor Williams opened the work session at approximately 6:15 p.m. and welcomed
Chris Hladick. Council Members and Mr. Hladick introduced themselves to each
other and briefly outlined their respective backgrounds.
Council proceeded to ask a variety of questions such as:
• Why are you interested in Kenai?
• What do you have to offer Kenai?
• What is your management style?
• What is your experience in the area of land issues (zoning)?
• How do you work with other City Managers and the people in Juneau?
• How are you at working with the federal government?
• How would you see yourself working with the legislators in Juneau?
� • Would you be comfortable going to Juneau?
• How many employees in Dillingham?
• Talk about a situation/ problem that you solved.
• How do you handle a complex issue with conflicting information?
• What role should city government have in the development of retail business?
• What is your experience with expansion projects (e.g. airport) and their effects
on the community?
• How does your budget process work?
• How do you feel about going out and getting money for projects? Are you good
at it?
• What about dealing with multiple agencies at once that don't always agree with
each other?
• How do you feel about a jail just outside the city limits?
• What would you do your first day on the job?
• In touring the City of Kenai today, did you notice weaknesses? What?
• What are your strengths and weaknesses?
• How large is the budget in Dillingham?
• What are your salary expectations? Moving expenses?
• When could you begin?
Mr. Hladick asked several questions of Council, and discussion ensued about a
number of topics.

Mayor Williams told Mr. Hladick that another candidate had been interviewed on May
232 2001, and that Council would meet at a Special Council Meeting on May 30, 2001
to make their decision. He said the candidates would be notified of the decision on the
morning of May 31, 2001.
The work session adjourned at approximately 8:20 p.m.
