MAYOR JOHN J. WILLIAMS, PRESIDING
Council Present: Bookey, Swarner, Porter, Williams, Moore, Frazer and Bannock
Mayor Williams opened the work session at approximately 6:12 p.m. and welcomed
Linda Snow. Council Members and Ms. Snow introduced themselves to each other
and briefly outlined their respective backgrounds.
Council proceeded to ask a variety of questions such as:
• Have you dealt with land issues (e.g. land use, re -zoning, sales)?
• How do you feel about rezoning?
• How do you resolve problems that factions of people feel differently about?
• What experience do you have with comprehensive planning?
• Describe your management style?
• How open are you to employees?
• Having lived in Kenai in the past and seeing it again now, do you see
weaknesses? What?
• How do you feel about a City Manager being involved in the community?
• Look at your current position in Petersburg and tell us what you can look back
and feel good about.
• Tell us about a time when you had to make a difficult decision about a large
issue. How did you handle it?
• How do you handle an issue that involves different government agencies with
different opinions? Politics?
• Have you had to terminate an employee? How do you handle that?
• What are your expectations of the Kenai job in terms of salary, moving
expenses, etc?
• What are your strengths and weaknesses?
• Do you think the City Manager should be involved in politics (in Juneau)?
• Have you written grants and gotten money?
• Give an example of one great success you have had? One great failure?
Ms. Snow asked several questions of Council, and discussion ensued about a number
of topics.
Mayor Williams told Ms. Snow that another candidate would be interviewed on May
25, 2001, and then Council would meet at a Special Council Meeting on May 30, 2001
to make their decision. He said the candidates would be notified of the decision on the
morning of May 31, 2001.
