Please see attached monthly reports for details. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Attachement 2 MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor Brian Gabriel and Kenai City Council THROUGH: Paul Ostrander, City Manager FROM: Brad Walker, Parks & Recreation Director DATE: July 11, 2022 SUBJECT: Mid-month Report – June 2022 June was a very busy month for Kenai Parks and Recreation. • The department had seven shelter reservations for the month of June. • Park Maintenance Tech(s) installed a new electronic scoreboard on field #2 at the little league fields. • Parks held a volunteer planting day on June 4th. We had 8 volunteers, fire department grilled out for the volunteers after the event was over. This is the first volunteer plant day since Covid- 19, we expect a better turnout in the years to come. • Parks held a kite festival on June 4th. Estimated over 350 attendees. The event show cased the State of Alaska’s largest kite. • Parks installed three new Little Libraries at Old Town Park, Beaver Creek Park, and at the Bluff Overlook. • Parks started installing a story walk at the Daubenspeck Family park. • Park Maintenance Tech(s) completed hanging banners along Willow St., Airport Way, Old Town, and at the Visitors Center Parking Lot. • Parks worked directly with KSA (Kenai Softball Association) on preparing for the Firecracker softball tournament held on July 4th weekend. A total of 56 teams are scheduled to attend. o Collectively parks worked an extra 60 hours preparing all four fields, grounds, and parking area for the tournament. • A total of 66 beetle kill trees were removed in June. o 16 trees removed at the Little League complex o 36 trees removed at the Kenai cemetery o 14 trees removed at Municipal park • The Park Director and Assistant Park Director are meeting regularly with all departments involved with operating the PU Fishery. This year will be the first year the PU Fishery is operated by Parks and Rec. 3 Page 2 of 2 • Crews performed several days of prep work for the upcoming personal use fishery. Tasks included signs, fencing, equipment staging, training, and organizing fee station material and supplies. • The Park Director and a Park worker are scouting/flagging potential new trails. We are working from the City of Kenai’s Trail Plan. • Slash Site June Numbers: o Total of 260 visits o Total of 225 hours worked at site  160 hours worked by slash site attendant  65 hours worked by fulltime operators o 46.3 acres treated • Rec Center June Numbers: o Reserved Gym Hours: 43 o Weight/Cardio Room Check In: 748 o Showers/Sauna: 263 o Racquetball: 72 o Wallyball: 11 o Other: 18 o Student: 427 o Kenai City Employee: 96 4 MEMORANDUM TO: Mayor Brian Gabriel and Kenai City Council THROUGH: Paul Ostrander, City Manager FROM: Brad Walker, Parks & Recreation Director DATE: August 10, 2022 SUBJECT: Mid-month Report – July 2022 • The department had seventeen shelter reservations for the month of July. • Park staff completed set up for the July 4th parade. • Park staff assisted KSA (Kenai Softball Association) with set up for their 56 team Firecracker Tournament. • Park staff prepared fields for the Little League All Star tournament held the second weekend of July. • Park staff set up tents and assisted the Kenai Rugby teams July tournament, which featured 16 different teams and one team traveling from Montana to participate. • The Director, Assistant Director and the Chamber Commerce are working with the Industry Days event coordinators on planning this event in August. • The Director and Assistant Director took over operations of the PU fishery. This included all dock operations, shack operations, hiring, and training. We received a lot of encouragement and assistance from supporting departments in our first year of running the PU fishery. • The first week of July consisted of the Park crew putting up all the PU fishery signage throughout the City of Kenai and all the fishery locations. The park crew also delivered all supplies to locations, delivered 4 wheelers, side by sides, and the water tank to their specific locations. • The Building Maintenance crew and park staff finished up the Multipurpose Facility project by the third week of July. The consisted of refinishing all the steel girders and supporting I-beams in the building to mitigate the rusting issues. • Park staff cleaned MPF facility in preparation of making Ice the last week of July so hockey tryouts can take place starting the first week of August. • Circulation motor #1 and #2 experienced problems during the start up of the ice rink, The Director, Park staff, and staff from Redline sports worked many late nights to get both motors back up and running so ice would be ready by Aug. 1st. • Park staff removed 77 stumps throughout the Parks, Cemetery, and City. We hope to be able rent a stump grinder again in August to continue removing stumps. This will be an ongoing process for the foreseeable future. 5 Page 2 of 2 • Park staff worked with the street department on tree removal at the dog park in preparation installing the new fence that better reflects the current boundaries of the dog park. • The Director is working with Wal-Mart community outreach for volunteers to help park staff install a story walk at Daubenspec Family Park.
