If ~he businesses ~hemselves could be kep~ in a clean orderly condition, ~he entire downtown area would benefit. I~ was decided ~ha~ a le~er would go ou~ ~o ~hose businesses on a lis~ ~o be furnished by the Chamber of Commerce. The letter will sugges~ each business check ~heir own p~operty fo~ repairs, pain~, dumps~ers, landscaping, and parking areas (~rash and broken glass). · · · · c. Flowers The Commission suggeSted doing something similar to Homer's design at the intersection just coming into ~he city. The city has planted flowers in such a way as to spell out the name "Homer" in a park-like space and this same type of scheme could be done at the green strip beginning in front of Alaska Statebank. The first step that needs to be done is to have a space dug out and some top soil brought in, then the flowers purchased and planted. Wild flowers were suggested since they do not entail a cost to the city or if there were money available in the budget, then perennials would be purchased. Several Commission members volunteered to the planting. Kayo McGillivray will be contacted concerning the help available for this project. A memo was d~afted to the finance director asking for a breakdown of the money avaiiabIe to the Commission, if any,. NEW BUSINESS None PERSONS PRESENT NOT SCHEDULED TO BE HEARD COMMITTEE QUESTIONS & COMMENTS The subject of the trees for the park strip was brought up and discussed. Commissioner Sheldon had spoken with Sue Carter of the Chamber of Comme~ce and found that a better idea might be to suggest if someone wanted to honor someone who had made a significant contribution to the community, whether living or dead could donate some money and have a tree planted with a small engraved plaque. This would be accomplished by having a nursery take care of the type of tree and the planting to ensure the tree would not die. This would be workable if the concept were to go to bid and the nursery to set an amount that could be worked into a budget. Chairman Wizniewski suggested the Commission think about having a gazebo at the Blue Star Memorial for the seniors or anyone passing and this will be brought up again at a later date. AD3OURNMENT The~e being no furthe~ business the meeting was adjourned. The next regular meeting will be Monday~ 3uly 18~ 1~8}. Submitted by: Janet Loper
