Chairman Wisniewski ~epo~ted [ha~ the 650 seedlings were planted by
himself, Diane Ta¥1o~, and others. So fa~, the su~vlval ~a[e ls
unknown. The t~ees a~e pIan~ed ciose together, but depending upon the
su~vivai ~a[e, they wlii no~ ~emain as dense. Pa~ Po~te~ contacted ~he
Chairman ~ega~ding 2 oid t~ees at ~he Senio~ Cen~e~ that needed
~ansplanting by the Rec Dept. c~ew, however, they have not been moved
as yet. Counciiwoman Bailie stated that it was suggested at Councli
'that this is a good ~ime of yea~ ~o t~anspian~; that perhaps Public
Works couid come in with a f~ont end ioade~ and pian[ some fuII'g~own
t~ees aiong the g~eens~lp in f~ont of Ca~s MaIi and some o~he~ ba~e

Councii wanted this done, that 1[ had already been done in f~ont of
~he Chambes with success. Chairman Wisniewski no~ed ~hat the~e were

FOR THE RECORD, THE COMMITTEE THANKS TIM WISNiEWSKI AND CREW FOR
PLANTING TREES AND FURTHER, SUPPORTS THE TRANSPLANTING OF LARGER TREES
FOR THE BARE AREAS IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA.
Tentatively, the date set for the transplant'ing'ls week~'~'f .... December
i?th.
The Committee noted that the crew is gone. Council had noted that
with the crews gone, what is going to happen to all the planter boxes
that are out. The flowers are stiI1 in fui1 bloom and very loveiy
except for a few which were not watered properly and the flowers died.
Overaii, the boxes and flowers were a success. Next year we must keep
in m~nd that the summer does not end in August.
I~ was noted that the nursery had specified that the di~t should be
~emoved at the end of the season. There a~e aiot of the yellow t~ash
bags left ~hat can be used to sto~e the di~ f~om each individual box,
saving aiot of work for spring. The boxes a~e stackable and should be
sto~ed carefuIi¥. As ye~, there is no word on where the boxes wii1 be
sto~ed, but ~he nursery has said the boxes need ~o d~¥ ou~ to p~event
ro~ting once the dirt is ~emoved. Stacking in ~he open ai~ for a
while wouid suffice.
The Committee discussed adding 28 more boxes for next year, doubling
the boxes at the same location and extending the beautification to
Forest Drive and Main Street Loop~ Willow Street further north.
MOTION:
Committee Membe~ Neison moved to o~de~ ~0 mo~e plan~e~ boxes of the
same deslgn as ~his yea~ pending a ~epo~t on finances, seconded
by Committee Membe~ MiI1e~.
Keeping in mind that [he price may be considerably higher by spring,
but also, mo~e voluntee~ labo~ may be available. Approximate value
is $~000. Should any p~ivate business wish to have thei~ own boxes,
the infio~mation on the builder will be made available. I~ was
stressed that identification is imperative f'or these boxes, the bes~
time would be when ~hey are sto~ed.
VOTE:
Motion carried unanimously.

This is the new Chrysler dealership along the Spur Highway.
Councilwoman 8ailie stated that the property would be stripped in the
front, but will return with a landscaping plan. Committee Member
Nelson noted that while the City is attempting to build up the core of
Kenai, i.e. the downtown sector, businesses seem to insist on building
along the highway and of course where do they go along the highway,
clearcutting the entire way. Councilwoman Bailie described the
dealership landscaping as it is now; two sides of the lot will be
trees and shrubs, the center area would be shrubs and flowers, and
then on the back of the lot the natural trees would be left. The
Committee discussed the possibility of reviewing landscaping plans of
leased City-owned lands.
C.,, ........ Becoming ila,i Fui,!... Commission
The Committee discussed with Councilwoman Bailie, the steps towards
achieving this end. The reasons given include: when first established,
the intent was for the Committee to become a Commission at some later
point; the work that is being done by the Committee does carry an
impact on the City; and has gained recognition from the public; and
there are fur%her goals that could be accomplished better as a
Commission than a Committee; a Commission reports directly ~o Council
and has closer contact with that body, a Council person being directly
appointed as representative where at the present time Councilwoman
Bailie at~ends the Committee meetings from interest and will inform
the Council of the wishes of the Committee at the next meeting.
The Committee noted the letters of appreciation wishing' 'to add Tesoro
and any other business that has maintained a high standard of
landscaping throughout the summer.
