The Committee discussed placemen~ of the ~emalning boxes and ~eioca~ing others for maximum effect. The Committee no~ed that some flowers do bette~ than others in the boxes and wilI make an inventory of the be~te~ ones fo~ next year. Councilwoman Bailie stated that suggestions had been made ~o her ~ega~ding elevating ~he circle plantings, example is Anchorage downtown. Councilwoman Bailie suggested she speak wi~h Keith Ko~nelis abou~ making some forms. c__._ Updat:e. on_Wooden. T,~a, sh Con~a!n.e,]~s Chairman Wisniewski and Mr. Simeroth reviewed the location of the trash containers. Chairman Wisniewski contacted Ens~ar concerning ~he ~rash barrels and lids and was informed that Candy Nugent had them. Upon Contact with Candy Nugen~, he was informed that ~hey were stored a~ a location in Soidotna and wouId contac~ the City or Chairman Wisniewski abou~ picking ~hem up. S!.dewa !..k ~, swleep.!ng Chairman Wisn~ewsk~ asked about sweeping alon§ ~he Spu~, ~f ~he Sta~e or the City does that. 3im $imeroth answered that he ~ould get: in touch with the State. Mr. Simeroth noted the area by the Chamber cabin as having alot of trash and dirt, the City crew being unable to get in there unless they do so after hours when no cars are parked there. NEW BUS I NESS Pat Porter joined the meeting. Due to the fact that she is a City employee, Pat cannot be a member, but will sit in on the meetlng as a resident. Chairman Wisniewski mentioned the certificates of achievement sent out last yea~ to businesses that have done a good job in enhancing thei~ business. Committee Membe~ Sheldon noted Kenai Electric esp. Councilwoman Bailie noted that the Pa~ks c~ew was maintaining the a~ea in f~ont of the Katma~, the Uptown, the smai1 plaza containing Fouteaux's (~ic), and Ca~'s. The Committee discussed at length the fact that othe~ businesses maintain thei~ own (banks, gas stations, etc.). It does c~eate a consistent visual effect if one entity maintains a f~ontage, howeve~ it is necessa~ to be consistent, to eithe~ maintain all o~ none at all. It was pointed out that the a~eas that a~e being mowed a~e ROW's to a certain extent. Councilwoman Bailie had been contacted by businesses down W~llow who feel that it ~s not fai~ that they a~e not getting the attention that the businesses along the Spu~ a~e. Committee Membe~ Sheldon stated that a few years ago, in an effort to clean up "the strip" Bogue Morgan had the g~ass mowed and then sent a bill to the businesses ~eceiving the service. Some paid and some did not, but those who did, app~eciated the service. The Committee discussed contacting the businesses. Chairman Wisniewski noted that Ron Kasp~isin had mentioned this also. The Committee diBcussed sending letters to businesses aqain this yea~ fo~ ~ecognition fo~ the work done and to encourage the ~the~ businesses. The Chamber of Comme~ce has a simila~ p~og~am fo~ homes as wei1 as bu~ine~ses. In the lette~ ~t might be mentioned that .the Pa~k~ c~ew wil! onl~ be maintain~ng the ROW, the ~est is up to the ind~vidua! which accomplishes two thing~ at once, it info~ms them of BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE July 9, 1985 Page 3 ® 9~ the roi1 of the City and encourages them ~o keep up the remainder ~o Iook Iike the ROW. Counciiwoman BaiIie asked if Janet couId get on the phone, con,act Valdez, Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, Anchorage, and some o~her communities thak have Iandscaping and find out how khey handle ~hei~ probIems.
