Chairman Wisniewski noted in the minutes of the las~ meeting ~hat nothlng had been resolved concerning khe sldewalk sweeping and asked thak ~he Committee again discuss the matter. There seems ~o exist a communications problem from Mr. Lacy of the DOT regarding the sweeping and fa[her than allow the problem ~o remain, someone needs ~o discuss ~he matter wi~h him. The Committee and Councilwoman Baille felt the bes~ method would be to direct Kayo McGi111vray ko meet with Mr. Lacy ~o resolve ~he problem. OLD BUS INESS a, ..... Report ...o.n_ Rallr_oad .... Ti_e_S Planning Specialist Loper reported on the results of contact with Spendard Building Supply. The company could obtain ~00 ties for the City at a cost of $1~.99/~ie which includes ~he ~ranspo~tation to ~he "fron~ door". The grade is 1% used and the engineer, Mr. Boysen was invited to inspect ~he two on ~he premises. Delivery date would be two weeks from the ~ime the o~der is placed. The Committee asked that Mr. Boysen be contacted with a copy ~o Keith Kornelis ~o inform him tha~ s~o~age space will be needed. The orde~ should go in prio~ to the end of August .when ~he road projec~ is to a point where the construction on the park can begin. BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE 3uly 22, 1986 Page 2 b. ....... Rep0~.t.. on. T.ools_~ O~de_~..d Chairman Wisniewski asked for a report on the tools that were ordered, 3im Simeroth answered that they were not yet in, but expected soon. C, .Repo~..t...on._Airpo~t~ way P~oJe..c._t_ Councilwoman Bailie felt that with the success of the cement plante~ ~ings, that perhaps the Committee should consider o~de~ing more and placing them a~ound Kenai. The t~iangle strips in front of Time Save~ and the Airport were discussed. At the last meeting M~. Gunthe~ of Kenai Nursery spoke of taking ove~ one of the cement planters in o~der fo~ the City to observe first hand some of the varied plants that would be attractive and g~ow well in Kenai fo~ a longe~ period of time~ however, the flowers would need to be o~dered p~io~ to Octobe~ fo~ the following sp~ing. The Committee fu~the~ discussed the possibility of having a local fi~m construct a fo~m fo~ making ou~ own cement planter ~ings. Committee Membe~ Selby will contact a fi~m familia~ with this type of p~oject and ~epo~t at the next meeting. As banners were placed back in the revenue sha~ing budget, placement and cost were discussed. Since the majo~ pa~t of the banners a~e the b~ackets, this p~oblem wii1 need to be worked out first. SeveraI fi~ms had submitted package deals with b~ackets and banners, however, wouId not sell the brackets separate f~om the banners. It was suggested that perhaps the high school welding class could come up with the parts and b~ackets necessary. It was aiso discussed that in o~de~ to reach a decision on piacement of banners, a meeting with Mrs. Snow would be necessary p~io~ to moving forward with any more plans. Planning Specialist Lope~ was directed to contact M~s. Snow and set up a meeting at her convenience. M~s. Snow will be t~aveiling f~om Anchorage. 6. NEW BUS INE$S a. Awards & Letters - List A 11st was presented that was used last yea~. Chal~man Wlsniewski volunteered to go over the list to mark the businesses to receive awards. The letters will be sent to the ~emainde~. b. ~ _Project .... _,.. Livinq...Memo.r_~a!._. Park Councilwoman Bailie gave a report on the progress of the project stating that a committee was being fo~med and would hold their first meeting Monday, August 8th at 7:00 RM at the Senior Center. Several of the ideas discussed at this meeting will be carried forward to the Rark Committee. BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE July 22, 1986 Page 3 7. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION REPORT No meeting this month 8~ COMMITTEE QUESTIONS & COMMENTS Councilwoman Bailie noted an article which had appeared in ~he Clarion concerning the beautification efforts in Soldotna and further noted that very little coverage had been granted ~o Kenai past and present. On at leas~ ~wo occasions the Clarion had been con~acted regarding events by the Commi%tee and the~e has been no coverage and no attendence. It was noted ~ha~ minutes and agendas do go to the Clarion and regular meetings are 11s~ed. Plannlng Specialist Loper was directed ~o contae~ a repo,%er at ~he Clarion and see if ~he efforts of Kenal could also be followed. 9. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:2~ PM.
