CALL TO OR_DER~: The meeting was called to order by Kathy Heus, Chair, at 7:41 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL' Kathy Heus, Carol Brenckle, Linda Wetzel, and Janice Rod.es. Dr. Paul Turner was excused. Also in attendance: Emily DeForest, Library Director; COuncilwoman Chris Monfor, Ad Hoc; and Ethel ¢lausen, KPC Librarian. 3. ~PPR~OV~.O.~ ..... A.~EN_DA; Commissioner Brenckle moved to approve the agenda. Commissioner Wetzel seconded. Agenda was approved by unanimous consent. 4. BE HEARD;.. None. 6. D,!~.~T_Q__R.~$--_R~PORT: SUmmer reading program went wel 1 wi th 157 children signing up and reading 848 books. The party was attended by 92 young people and the~ were given prizes for various accomplishments. Shannon Kovac, Carol Ford, July Neal and Debbie Fautk were commended for their help with the party. During the summer Mrs. DeForest atten4ed the American Library Association Conference in Chicago and the Pa¢~ic Northwest Library Conference in Port[and. She enjoyed seein~ the new products~ displays and computers. Mrs. DeForest advised that $142 had been stolen from the desk in the library. The incident is still being investigated; and ~n the ~uture, the money is being placed elsewhere. 7. .O_L_D a. Summer Reading Program: In addition to what was a4dressed under the Director's report, the children produced a cookbook and each Commissioner was ~iven a copy. The possibility of selling the cookbooks at the Book Fair was ~iscussed. b. Library Goals and Objectives: Commissioner Brenckle asked ~or a copy of the Library Bill of Rights and the ALA Freedom to Read Statement to assist in reviewing the goals and objectives. Chairwoman Heus noted that some of the objectives 'had been reached while others needed to be adjusted. There was discussion of grants and how the~ are obtained and discussion of services for the handicapped. Commissioner MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 4, 1'990 KENAI ADVISORY LI'BRARY COMMISSION Page -2- Brenckl'e moved to place the goals and objectives on next month's agenda so the Commissioners can thoroughly review them and then go over them line item by line item at the next meeting. Commissioner Rodes seconded. Motion carried un an imo us I y. 'c. Library Policy Regarding Donated Material: The Commission reviewed the 'Library Policy on acceptance of gifts. Commissioner Brenckle suggested having a promotion to buy your library a book ~or Christmas. Mrs. DeForest then discussed the pros and cons of such a promotion as well as other methods of accepting donations. Commissioner Wetz'el suggested having a tree decorated with book ornaments and then the people desiring to donate could sign their names on the book ornament of their choice. d. Library Ball. The idea of a Library Ball has been relayed to the Board. A~ter discussion, it was ~elt since the Bi-Centennial celebration will include a ball that this may not be a good time ~or one. 8. NEW BUSIN..E_S~.~L a. Book Sale Date ~or 1991: A date has not ~et been set; however, Mrs. DeForest will attempt to conEirm February 15 & 16 or February 8 & 9 as a second choice. b. Library Board Update: The Board will 'meet Thursday with new members and a re-organization will then probably take place. Chairwoman Heus noted and appreciate4 the nice ~ormat of the-agenda, and' she welcomed the new secretary. 10.
