CALL TO ORDER' The meeting was called to order by Chairman Hanson at 8'00 p.m. 2. ROLL CALL' Commissioners present were' Hanson, Heus, Brenckle, and Brown. Also present were Library Director Mrs. DeForest, Councilwoman Monfor and KPC Librarian Clauson. 3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Heus desired to add a welcome to the new commission member under Old Business and an activities report ~rom the Friends o~ the Library under New Business. Hearing no objections, the amended agenda was approved. 4. .APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 1, 1992' Heus corrected the earthquake rating in the ~irst paragraph o~ Commission Comments to read, "The book stacks are supposed to withstand a 6.0 earthquake." HEUS MOVED TO APPROVE THE AMENDED MINUTES. BRENCKLE SECONDED. MOT I ON CARR I ED. 5. PERSONS SCHEDULED TO BE HEARD' None. 6. LIBRARIAN' S REPORT' DeForest is preparing to close out the education grant tomorrow. The Library Open House in on Tuesday, December 22, 1992, ~rom 4'00 .p.m. to 7'00 p.m. Librarian DeForest thanked Heus ~or training Kenai Middle School students and bringing them over to help in the Kenai Library. They did a very commendable job and a 1 ot o~ work was accomplished through the e~ort. One of the added joys was later many students came back bringing their parents with them. A Brownie troop also volunteered and helped to shel~ easy children's books. 7. OLD BUSINESS' a. A1 though Mr. Murphy was unable to attend the meeting, the Commission wanted t.o welcome him aboard and appreciates the vacancy being ~illed, KENAI ADVISORY LIBRARY COMMISSION November 10, 1992 Page- 2 ~ NEW BUSINESS' a · Heus had read an article in the Alaska Library Network newsletter regarding the American Disabilities Act that required libraries to complete a sel~-evaluation study by January 26, 1993, and asked if Kenai was preparing an evaluation. She was advised that Kenai has received an evaluation package and will be working on it. DeForest .-wil 1 share the evaluation with the Commission upon completion. The purpose is basically to see in what areas the library is in compliance and what areas it is not. b · Future Building Issues. DeForest showed the Commission a pamphlet by the City showing state grants to be pursued, and the library expansion is third on the list under economic development and tourism. It looks encouraging. One concern regarding expansion was the parking; however, Mr. LaShot from the City has read over the codes and feels if the hump is taken out between the two parking lots and the two made into one lot, then it could pass the code. Decisions need to be made regarding the needs of the library such as listening booths, whether more public-use computer space would be needed, and how much room is needed for different types o~ automation. Two booklets have been requested by DeForest. Publications and resource materials regarding the planning o~ libraries need to be gathered and brought to next month's meeting ~or further discussion. C · d · In Bor sti pas it int mee discussing with Mr. Boedecker at the Kenai Peninsula ough, the distribution of the $10,000 capital grant is 11 bogged down. The Kenai Library. proposal for spending sed. However, several other libraries wanted to spend on repairs or equipment and the grant was originally ended for acquisitions. Mr. Boedecker is supposed to t with the gentlemen who wrote the grant to ~ind out the intent and if they would allow an amendment to the wording o~ the bill. I~ the library is lucky, the money might come through in January. Discussion ~ollowed regarding the process necessary to receive the money. Heus reported the Friends o~ the Library Board is preparing a pamphlet for library patrons describing the services offered, hours of service, and directing them where things are located in the library. They are also establishing a dues structure for the Friends to provide people who are interested in supporting the library at various levels and al so to garner a resource list o~ persons who could be called upon ~or a specialized activity. The Friends are KENAI ADVISORY LIBRARY COMMISSION November 10, 1992 Page- 3 also talking about having a tea tentatively scheduled for January 15, 1993. DeForest stated the Friends have received funds in honor of Mr. Hackney sufficient to purchase another video carousel and the Friends have recently purchased about $700 to $800 worth of children's books. They received a grant ~rom Arco and purchased some National Geographic videos along with other educational videos. 9. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS- Hanson inquired about getting a student representative for the Commission. Discussion followed and DeForest stated she would talk to Mr. Smalley about a possible candidate. A formal letter o~ resignation was received ~rom Dr. Turner. This creates a vacancy in the Vice-Chair position. Hanson asked that election ~or Vice-Chair be placed on next month's agenda. CommissiOner's requested an updated address/telephone list be included in next month's packet. 10. AD JOURNMENT · The next regular monthly meeting will be on Tuesday, December 1, 1992, at 7'30 p.m. HEUS MOVED FOR ADJOURNMENT AND BRENCKLE SECONDED. MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AT 9'00 P.M.
