Lit tle ~_ Le_a~ue Got underway the middle of MaY. There were more teams this year in bo~h senior and younger teams, even ~hough some of ~he younger age groups were dropped. There has been a problem with payment for umpires, however, it has been resolved with Mrs. Ruth. b. Adult Softball Underway last week, men playing Mondays and Wednesdays, the women on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a ~ou~nament ove~ the Memorial Day weekend sponsored by the Umpires. A sound system fo~ each field is being considered by the umpires. Nex~ weekend is the women's invi~a~ionaI and i~ is the same weekend that ~he Vier Nam Veteran's Memorial is going ~o be in that a~ea. The Clarion wii1 be sponsoring a second annual co-ed tournament in 3uly. The Vier Nam Veterans will be sponsoring a co-ed invitational in 3uly. c~. .... Summe~,,H!~e re~ulat, ion9 The~e has been no official notification, however, the~e is indication that a court case bein§ conducted in Texas deals ~ith municipalities~ specifically parks & rets departments that hire summer workers, and PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION June 11, 1985 Page 2 would place these summer hires under the same regulations as "normal" industry. This deals mainly wi~h overtime. d .~ Eqqipmen.~ The Commission discussed a new limer for the fields. This would be in addition to the one purchased last year. A cover for the dugouts is s~ili needed. Various groups discussed donating the money, however, no~hing has come forward. The backstop fence at the Oilers Field is in bad shape to the point ~hat injuries could occur should someone have to go back for a ball. Kayo is getting estimates on the cost of replacing that fence. Kayo is also looking into ~he possibility of portable backstops which could be used for practice fields. e...Cemete~y ~ePor~ The Department has been ~aking ca~e of the cemetery for the las~ 2 yea~s, however, the~e a~e plans to enlarge the cemetery. The street department is going ~o be doing [he initial clearing, spreading, and platting. The Parks Dept. will then go in and p!ant the g~ass. The street crews went in to begin work last week and found ~he g~ound still f~ozen. f. .... Summer Recreation Proqram The program started Monday at Sears Elementary wi~h an enrollmen~ of 89. One of ~he rec center staff, Diana McDonnel, is an art major and is working with the kids a couple days a week. On Monday's and Wednesday's Stephanie Patel, an attorney, gives karate lessons. g. __ A~o ...3~s. se.- Owen June 29th is the date set for the track meet. 5. OLD BUS I NESS a., .... Signage ~O~r ....the.... ~.a.l.!f. ield The Commission asked Kayo for a report on the p~og~ess of the signs fo~ the bailfieids near Doyle's ~ruck van pa~king. There is still a serious problem and the signs may heip a bit. Kayo has ordered ~he catalogues, howeve~ they have not yet arrived. Also the area near the cemetery. Three-wheelers and 4x4's have damaged the grass ~hat was seeded iast year and unless blocked, it wii1 be damaged again this yea~. The City Manage~ has spoken with Mike Lucky of DEC who stated that if the City wanted ~o go in do some work to prepare the area fo~ a field the~e wouId be no p~oblem. The Public Works Di~ecto~ has indicated that they may be able to s~a~t work soon. .... Update on GO!f_ COurse,, The golf course has been approved and the surveying has gone for RFP, The sand pit ~s stol! taking up ~he space between Candlelight and Linwood, 6. NEW BUSINESS a~.. ~Adver[isinqi.Pr,gposal f~om TV 17 A letter has been received from a local television studio offering an advertJsing package. The le[ter was sen[ on to Council who referred it on to the Commission. MOTION: Commissione~ Siekawi[ch moved ~o recommend that the p~ogram continue with. the policy of no paid advertising, seconded by Commissione~ W~ight. The Commission and Kayo no[ed that the program ~eceives public service advertisement and free advertisement through ~he Weekly Adviso~ and ~hat [he Commission wiI1 give consideration to the p~oposaI fo~ the future, shouId ~he funds become available and the need a~ises. VOTE: Motion passed unanimously. 7. BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE REPORT a. _ Repo~[ The c~ews are on the job, mowing, fertilizing, liming, being done. The flower boxes were late in getting out which is not bad since the temp dropped to 29° this last weekend. The~e will be 60 flowe~ boxes going out, work will start on the circle flowe~ bede Monday. A strip of flowers is being put in at City Hall, some fo~ the ~ec cente~ also. b? .... Meeting With Ron Kasp~isin Kayo has not received official nOtification, however, since there are some things to go over, he expects it to be mostly review and probably to be a joint meeting with the old Towne Committee. PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION 3une 11, 1985 Page 4 g- ~ Pa~ks .Updla,~e The City has a new vacuum truck which is able to clean the restrooms, however, wi~h the temp still dropping to 29° at night there are still restrooms that are frozen. The crew has been repairing the vandaiism to ~he parks, some of ~he doors had been ripped off the res~rooms. d..~ Landscap,,~ng,iDaBa~qe Once again, the~e are vehicles using the hill at the end of Fo~es~ Drive and seriously e~oding the bank, even though the City wen~ ~o the expense of placing a wall there to curtail tha~ activity. The Commission discussed possible solutions, suggesting a ~ ~o 4 foo~ me~al s~ake a~ intervals, if funding can be found. e COMMISSION COMMENTS & QUESTIONS None 9.
