I welcome the opportunity to share my qualifications and reasons for applying and look forward to your interview. I have been a resident of Kenai for nearly all of my life and have had the pleasure and honor of serving on this Council from October 1993 to February 2003 when I resigned the seat to take a position at the State of Alaska that required a move to Anchorage. When returning to Kenai in 2008, 1 was clear to my realtor: only show us homes in the Greater City of Kenai; I had no desire to live elsewhere. It was a thrill to find our new home where we've resided since. However, upon return, I've seen a difference in the once vibrant, performing and active city that I had left earlier. I found a city that doesn't have vision, positive direction or even stated goals. A City Administration that has since seemed content to coast on past laurels and a Council not challenging the status quo. If selected for this position, over its remaining term, I intend to push you and the administration to reclaim that 'drive' and prideful momentum that was once prevalent yet can be again. Due to multiple parts of my professional life, I have kept up with the daily actions that influence the City and most importantly: its residents and visitors. From retail sales, property leasing (including the Kenai Municipal Airport) and providing hospitality service, one nagging phrase continues to rear its ugly head: "Kenai. Where businesses go to die." Why does that phrase even exist? When asked on a radio program I have the pleasure to host, neither our Mayor nor former Council member (and current applicant) could answer. Sadly, I know the answer. I know because I've been living with it for much of the last 15 years. I am willing to commit to the remainder of this term to make that phrase obsolete; to return Kenai to a place of prominence for businesses and residents alike.
