HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-03-28 KCVB MinutesPresident Fred Braun called the regular meeting of the Kenai CVB to order at 5:44p.m., March 28, 2005, in the Kenai CVB Board Room. Roll call was taken and the following members were present: Members Fred Braun Jacquie Steckel Sharon Brower Pat Porter David Edwards -Smith Absent Jeny Dunn Robert Fulton Excused Robin West Marion Nelson Ron Malston Visitors Present: Mya Renken, KCVB Executive Director, and Lisa Strother, KCVB Administrative Specialist Approval of Agenda: Brower moved to approve the agenda, Steckel seconded. Vote: Unanimous Elections Edwards -Smith moved to ratify the election of the 2005 KCVB Board of Directors; Brower seconded. There was a discussion about board attendance. Renken had spoken with Fulton, who had informed her about a scheduling conflict on March 28, 2005. Renken has been unable to contact Dunn. Vote: Unanimous Election of New Officers' Braun suggested postponing election of officers until April meeting. Brower moved to postpone elections; Edwards -Smith seconded. Vote: Unanimous Approval of Minutes: Edwards -Smith moved to approve the agenda, Steckel seconded. Amendment to February minutes remove Sandra Vozar from roll call as she resigned position prior to meeting date. Vote: Unanimous Persons Scheduled to be Heard None Kenai Convention Visitors Bureau Kenai, AK Regular Meeting March 28, 2005 Diane Loftsted Executive Directors Report Discussion: Staff working on new collateral materials promoting city and KCVB, hope to have some to bring to Great Alaska Sportsman Show in Anchorage. Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 26 great success, we're ready to start planning for next year. Idea of working with the Alaska Media Roadshow to sponsor /house a "celebrity" chef including a Kenai Wild Cook -off in the Fall. Kenai River Spot Association contacted Renken about a 8500 sponsorship for Science on the Kenai. Spoke to the Peninsula Clarion regarding changes at the Kenai Visitors Cultural Center, including the 2006 summer exhibit. KCVB has taken on an additional MASST participant to coordinate the KEDS proposal of a Saturday Market, scheduled to start on Memorial Day weekend and last through Labor Day weekend. Suggested to limiting all guests of the opening Gala May 13 to two (2) free alcoholic beverages per person, guests must pay for any additional alcoholic beverages. The Board approved the Executive Director's recommendation in regards to providing alcohol at the Gala Reception. Red hat ladies will be parading through Kenai on April 25 followed by a small reception here at the Center. Still need help with art show sponsors! Financial Report Financial records through February 28, 2005 were presented and questions answered. Unfinished Business Bed tax The KCVB Board of Directors discussed the ordinance as written. Renken was directed to write a letter on behalf of the Board of Directors addressing recommendations for changes to the ordinance as discussed. Board was concerned bed tax revenues were not going to be returned to the tourism industry or to the city in which funds were collected. Braun moved to draft a letter addressing recommendations as discussed by the KCVB Board of Directors; Brower seconded. Vote: Unanimous KEDS Representatives KEDS Steering Committee is being formed in place of the KEDS group. KCVB has one appointee to the group to represent the organization. Renken was asked to represent KCVB and inform the Board of Directors as work progresses. New Business Renken requested $1500 be budgeted for new lightweight tables for the Kenai Visitors Cultural Center. She checked prices in Anchorage but also will check local businesses for a comparable rate so we can buy local. Braun suggested getting a reader board type sign for the KVCC to advertise upcoming events and to notify the public about what is happening at the Center. Renken directed Strother to investigate prices, etc. Vote: Unanimous Comments: Steckel Thanks for coming, everyone. Help support anything that brings people here to Kenai encourage new business, cannery tours, whatever it takes. Edwards -Smith Take advantage of Kenai's arts community attract performers, more nightlife, etc. Porter Sent letters to all vacant property owners in Kenai offering to help sell, demo, donate, etc. all vacant properties. Kenai rack card Looks good, add dip netting, and better Kenai city photos, Brower Congrats on success of the egg hunt, congrats to Alise on her wedding, welcome to new directors. Loftsted It's great to be back. KCVB is heading in a good direction for Kenai CVB's future. Braun Kenai is the aviation hub of the Kenai Peninsula, let's take advantage of that fact. Welcome back Diane, and thank you everyone for being here.
