1. Describe yourself:
I have been involved with community service since I was little. My family is very active in community
theatre and the Kenai Animal Shelter. I have a keen interest in animals and have had too many fam-
ily members and friends hurt in moose /vehicle collisions. I want to do something about it. I am using
my talents as an artist and an actress to create a successful preventative program. Putting on a moose
outfit to out road safety and illustrating a book that tells the story of an orphaned
moose fr m i my way of making a difference.
2. Describe the project:
Every year in our community hundreds of moose are killed and many people are injured in moose/
vehicle collisions. Kids could help reduce these accidents. I have created a program that empowers
children to be partners in safety by using a character I've created called Missy the Moose. Missy will
visit classrooms, be heard in public service messages and be featured in a book. All of these avenues
will be used to inspire kids to help look for moose along our roadways and encourage drivers to
"Watch out for Missy." In this mini grant, I have included the illustrations from the book I've created, a
sample public service message (along with an original theme song) to be aired on KSRM, and photo-
graphs from when I piloted the classroom presentation portion of the program this spring at a local
elementary school.
The time line for this project will be from November to March. I will be visiting classrooms, presenting
the Missy the Moose book and airing public safety messages as Missy over KSRM. This project will be
a tremendous benefit to people in Kenai. If I prevent just one wreak through this educational pro-
gram, all the effort will be worth it.
This project has three parts to it.The first is visiting classrooms as Missy the Moose. As you can see
from the photos, my grandmother has already made me a moose outfit. It works great. The second
part is the radio spots. As you can tell from the CD I included, I have already recorded a 30 second
radio ad to start running in November on KSRM. This summer I am asking businesses to buy air time
so I can get this public service message on the air with as much frequency as possible. For every spot
a business buys, KSRM donates an additional one. I've already got businesses supporting this part of
the project, including HI -Speed Gear, Winegarten Attorney at Law, and Kelly Riley Photography. What
I need from the City of Kenai is the $500 for the printing of the illustrated book. As you can tell from
the art work I included with this application, it has already been created. I just need to have it profes-
sionally printed and bound. I would like to give these books to kids when I visit the schools in Kenai
and donate some to the Kenai Library.
4. How will you know if your project is successful?
To some degree, statistically I can tell if this program has been successful. If the number of vehicle/
moose collisions go down then I will have achieved my goal. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fac-
tors that go into how many moose are killed on the road every year. Still, if kids recognize Missy the
Moose and are reminding their parents to watch out for moose and drive cautiously, then I think I will
know this project has been successful. It will have gotten kids involved with making our roads safer.
Thank you so much for considering my mini -grant application. I really believe that Missy could be a
moose that makes a real and positive impact on our community instead of a deadly one.
Procedures: Applications are submitted to the City of Kenai Together We Can!
Steering Committee for review through the Kenai City Clerk. (Students' applications
must be signed /approved by a teacher.) Upon approval of application and execution
of Letter of Agreement. 90% of the grant funds will be issued through the Kenai
Finance Department. A report will be given to the City Council of awarded projects. A
written report must be submitted to the Steering Committee within thirty (30) days of
completion of the project. Council will present a proclamation upon receipt of the
completed project and financial reports.
Awards: Projects most likely to receive funding are those that will benefit the
community/neighborhoods the most. This includes projects that create the most
visible and lasting change.
