City of Kenai Mini -Grant Application: Kenai Soil & Water Conservation District
Brief Description of the Organization
The purpose of the Kenai Soil & Water Conservation District is to nurture sustainable
agriculture on the Kenai Peninsula. The District is a locally- controlled, state - authorized
entity with responsibilities delegated by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources'
Commissioner under Alaska Statute 41.10. A five- member volunteer Board of
Supervisors elected from among the District's cooperators oversees District staff and
establishes goals and projects to meet cooperators' needs. The District is funded in part
by the State of Alaska. Other sources of funding include private and federal grants,
donations, and fees - for - service. For more information on our programs and services,
see www.kenaisoilandwater.org.
Brief Description of the Project
The Problem: The supply of food grown on the Central Kenai Peninsula has increased
steadily in the last several years, but the consistent message from consumers is "we don't
know where to find it!" Meanwhile, we have documented cases of Alaska Grown
produce going to waste for lack of a market. We need to do a better job of connecting
producers and consumers in this community so that producers can be economically viable
and consumers can have access to healthy food choices while spending their money
within our local economy. A key step is raising consumer awareness about the full range
of venues where Alaska Grown products can be purchased.
The Solution: We are seeking financial support to run a comprehensive media
campaign, utilizing commercial and public radio stations and local newspapers, in May,
June, July and August. Each radio ad will reinforce Alaska Grown's "Closer. Fresher.
Better" message and highlight a particular local food connection, i.e. the
existing Saturday markets in Kenai and Soldotna, a new farmers market at the Kenai
Peninsula Food Bank, the Central Peninsula Local Foods Directory, local restaurants
participating in the Restaurant Rewards program, or locally -owned retail outlets featuring
Alaska Grown. Paid newspaper advertising, free radio and newspaper PSA's, special
promotion(s) at the popular Peninsula Oilers baseball games, Facebook announcements
and wide distribution of the Central Peninsula Local Foods Directory will complement
and reinforce the paid radio ads.
How the Project Benefits the Community of Kenai: Our goal is that by 2022 there is a
fully- integrated local food system on the Kenai Peninsula. This entails nurturing viable
farm businesses while educating consumers and increasing demand for healthy, local
food. By the end of summer, 2013, we have confidence that Central Peninsula
consumers will no longer be in the dark about where to buy Alaska Grown or why they
should, i.e., the health, economic and environmental benefits of eating more locally.
Local food is consistently more nutritious than food that has been grown in worn out soil,
using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, stored for long periods of time and shipped long
distances. Buying locally produced food takes the pressure off the planet by greatly
Page 2 of 2
reducing the amount of fuel it takes to transport food from where it is grown to where it is
consumed. Supporting local food producers is also good for the local economy.
The target market for this campaign is women 25 -54, women shopping for their families.
According to listenership data for the KSRM Radio Group, 7200 women in this age
group listen each week. About 1800 more listen to KDLL. If 10% of those women
decided to spend an additional $20 on Alaska Grown products, that would be an
additional $18,000 into the local foods economy benefiting producers, retailers,
restaurants, and the entire community!
Kenai S WCD is coordinating this project on behalf of partners including the Central
Peninsula Farmers Market and Kenai Peninsula Food Bank (501(c)3's), the People
Promoting Wellness Local Foods Group, and dozens of small -scale local food producers.
FINAL NOTE
Thank you, readers, for considering this proposal. Central Peninsula advocates of Alaska
Grown and local food would be extremely grateful for your support. You won't be
disappointed!

Provide a Description of the Group You Will Be Participating In:
I am a sophomore attending Kenai Central High School in Kenai, Alaska. I am working to raise money to fund
an unique educational and cultural experience as I was chosen as a Student Ambassador for the People to
People Student Ambassador 2014Australian Journey. To take part in this opportunity, I must raise $7000 of
which I haw raised some money already. I am looking for monetary support and am greatly appreciative of
any contributions received.
The People to People Student Ambassador Programs provide unique student trips which are designed to
deliver a lifetime of global awareness and readiness for success in a fun filled 2 -3 week summer adventure.
For over five decades, People to People Ambassador Programs introduced more than 500,000
Ambassadors to life- changing experiences on all seven continents:
-80% of our alumni are accepted into their first-choice college
-98% of parents recommend our educational travel programs
-94% of participating students recommend People to People Ambassador Programs' to their peers as these
educational trips cause Ambassadors to look at the world, its people, and international events differently. its
a change that could mean the difference between being passed over by the ideal employer, or a future full of
achievement. High school Ambassadors can earn academic credit through the Washington School of World
Studies. Eastern Washington University also offers early college credit to Ambassadors. Academic experts
recognize it as proof that real curriculum was wrapped into the student ambassador's educational tour.
Involvement in Community:
I have volunteered for many community events here in Kenai, most of which were for Frontier Community
Services. I have been a volunteer for the Frontier Community Services during holiday events and the World
Series Baseball Game since 2008. 1 have helped at the Spring Social sponsored by FCS, Hope Community
Resources, and Birchwood Center annually since 2011. Just last summer 1 volunteered at the City of Kenai
Animal Shelter. In the Kenai Peninsula Oilers season of 2011, 1 acted as a ball girl for the team. In my
Freshman year at Kenai Central High School, I received a letter for a 4.0 GPA, and this year, my sophomore
year, I received a 3.5 GPA. Throughout the Saturday Market this summer, my mother, sister, and myself will
be setting up a stand. We will be making and selling handcrafted items, and also sharing my educational and
cultural opportunity through the People to People Student Ambassador Program with others on the Kenai
Peninsula including summer tourists from other states. I have a memorandum of agreement with Bridges
Community Resources and New Beginning Family Services to utilize their business licenses and meet the
requirements to sell items at Kenai Saturday Market.
Project for Funding:
I will be raising money to fund my educational trip with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. I
am an individual requesting mini -grant funding to assist me in setting up at the Saturday Market in Kenai to
sell handmade arts and crafts of which all profits will go to fund my educational trip. If I am able to raise
enough funds for this project, I will be representing Kenai, Alaska during an educational experience of which I
will be able to earn college credit for. I will be able to share my experiences and culture with people of
another country for 20 days in the year of 2014.
Budget:
The $500 1 am requesting will fund the entire summer cost for space rental at the Kenai Summer Market for
17 Saturdays at $20 per Saturday resulting in a total of $340.00 and a shelter costing $250. 1 need to
purchase a shelter to cover my space rental to protect my items I am selling from the weather. Home Depot
sells a 10 X10 covering for $250.00. If I am granted the requested funding, it is my goal to earn the rest of
the cast of my educational experience with the People to People Student Ambassador Program. The cost of
this unique educational experience is $7,000 of which I have begun fundraising for and have earned $1560
to date.
Successful project:
If my project is successful, I will have the opportunity to share my experiences with Kenai Peninsula residents
and students about cultural experiences in another country. I will also have been able to educate another
country's community about our culture here in Kenai.
