HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 2004-39Suggested by: City Council CITY OF KENAI RESOLUTION NO. 2004-39 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY IN THE CITY OF KENAI AND PROVIDING SERVICES TO ASSIST IN THE SELECTION AND ACQUISITION OF SUITABLE LAND FOR THE FACILITY. WHEREAS, the general population of the Central Kenai Peninsula (Kenai, Soldotna, Nikiski, Sterling, Salamatof and between) has grown three percent (3%) between 2000 and 2003 from 29,560 to 30, 532; and, WHEREAS, the senior population (55+) has grown 19% in that same period, from 4,504 to 5,361; and, WHEREAS, by 2008, the senior population is projected to grow 60%, while the general population will have increased less than ten percent (10%) according to Community and Economic Development estimates; and, WHEREAS, as of December 2003, the Central Peninsula indicated a demand of ten senior assisted living units to meet present demands and that growth rate is anticipated to increase by over three units per year, or, to 16 units by 2005 and 27 units by 2008; and, WHEREAS, to meet the demand for affordable, safe, assisted living housing for the residents of the Central Peninsula, it is essential efforts be expanded to develop a centrally located, modern facility to accommodate the needs of the growing senior population; and, WHEREAS, the Kenai Senior Connection, Inc., a non-profit endowment corporation has applied for grant funding to develop an assisted living facility designed specifically for the long-term care of seniors in the sub-region and for the facility to be located in the City of Kenai; and, WHEREAS, the Kenai Senior Connection's intent is to expand the development of the project to include other organizations within the Central Peninsula to incorporate their efforts and ideas for development of long-term care assistance for the senior population; and, WHEREAS, the Kenai Economic Development Strategy (KEDS) working group identified the needs of the senior population as their number one priority under its Quality of Life designation. Resolution No. 2004-39 Page 2 of 2 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, the City of Kenai supports the efforts of the Kenai Senior Connection as the focal group for development of an assisted living facility within the City of Kenai and the City Council, by this resolution, resolves to provide it services to assist in the selection and acquisition of suitable land to support an assisted living facility and its growth needs for the residents of Kenai and the surrounding communities. d~~ ~J.
