HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution No. 2013-66Suggested by: Mayor Porter CITY OF KENAI KENAI.AIASKA RESOLUTION NO. 2013 -66 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF BREAST CANCER AWARENESS, EDUCATION AND EARLY DETECTION. WHEREAS, after skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women. About one in eight women born today in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during her life; and, WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, and is projected to claim the lives of nearly 40,000 women this year; and, WHEREAS, an estimated 232,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in 2013; and, WHEREAS, although mortality rates have fallen as knowledge about the disease has increased, the number of breast cancer cases diagnosed each year still continues to rise; and, WHEREAS, there are now more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S.; and, WHEREAS, men as well as women are at risk for breast cancer. It's estimated that more than 2,200 men will be diagnosed in 2013, and around 400 men will die from the disease. While far less common in men than in women, men still have a 1 in 1,000 chance of getting breast cancer in their lifetime; and, WHEREAS, self breast - examinations and mammography are among the most effective and widely available methods of early detection of breast cancer; and WHEREAS, several new and promising technologies are being developed to enhance the early detection of breast cancer, including: ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), medi- photonics, new signal processing, and several kinds of digital computer - enhanced images; and, WHEREAS, although October is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many communities and organizations are dedicated to raising awareness and educating individuals about breast cancer throughout the year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF KENAI, ALASKA, that the City of Kenai encourages our residents to join in activities that increase awareness of breast cancer prevention and supports research working towards eradication of the disease.
