In March of 2014, the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Bureau of Investigation — Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit provided the Kenai Police Department with a $4,693.06 asset forfeiture check. These funds were related to asset forfeitures from a criminal investigation. Because the funds were received through the Department of Justice federal asset sharing process, the funds law shall be used for law enforcement purposes only. Permissible uses of the funds include, but are not limited to, law enforcement investigations, training, and equipment. We are permitted to purchase equipment which is used by law enforcement personnel that supports law enforcement activities. I am requesting an ordinance to appropriate these funds to the General Fund, Police - Small Tools to help pay for police equipment.
